Deer Dash Trail Races - Hawarden, IA

A trail running event held at Oak Grove Park in Hawarden, Iowa, located along the Big Sioux River. Oak Grove Park is a 433 acre county park with free entrance and parking. The park offers overnight camping, cabins, and modern restrooms with showers.

Race options include:

  • 3.5 miles single-track trail
  • 7.5 miles single-track trail, rejoins 3.5 mile course at about 5 miles
  • about 12.5 miles longer course using newly acquired park land

Courses run mostly on single-track mountain bike and hiking trails with many twists, turns, and elevation changes. Runners start near Oak Grove Lodge and all distances finish back at the Lodge where post-race refreshments will be available. Course routes and distances are subject to change based on trail conditions and Big Sioux River conditions.

Registration details listed for the event include a standard price of $40 through the registration cutoff and a reduced price of $15 for those 18 years old and under. Registration closes Wed, Jun 3 at 4:00 PM CT. Current Sioux Falls Area Running Club members were offered a discount code at registration opening.

Chip timing is provided by 605 Running Company. Pets are not allowed in the Trail Race Series. No refunds or credits are offered. The race is part of a points series that awards 10 points for first place down to 1 point for tenth, with age divisions including 29 and under, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60 plus. A long-running trail event at Newton Hills offering 2 and 6 mile races on October 10, 2026, that count toward the Sioux Falls Area Running Club 2026 Trail Series points championship.

A trail ultramarathon at Newton Hills State Park near Canton SD with 20K, 30K and 50K on a 10k loop. Each loop has about 850 ft of gain, an aid station at the loop start finish, and shared sections with horse trails.
