Newton Hills Trail Race - October 10, 2026, Canton, SD
The Newton Hills Trail Race is a fall trail running event held in Newton Hills State Park in Canton, SD, organized by the Sioux Falls Area Running Club (SFARC). The event offers two distances and uses chip timing for results.
- 6 Mile
- 2 Mile
Both races start and finish in the same area near the picnic shelter on the far side of the suspension bridge at the Blue Diamond Trail Head. The 2 mile course follows the Woodland Trail single-track loop with one large hill and returns to the start area. The 6 mile course begins in the opposite direction, drops down a service road through the horse camp, enters multi-purpose trails with three prominent climbs and stretches of flatter trail, then joins the 2 mile Woodland Trail loop to finish.
Registration is priced the same for both distances; standard registration is $40 and a reduced rate of $15 applies to participants 18 years old and under through the registration cutoff. Registration closes on October 7 at 4:00 PM CT. A park day pass or permit is required for entry to the state park. Pets are not permitted in the Trail Race Series. Event swag will be provided for races, with specifics varying by year.
SFARC has hosted a trail race at Newton Hills State Park since 2002; the current 2 mile and 6 mile formats have been used since 2007. Runners earn series points by placing in age divisions that include 29 and under, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60 and over. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
