Dartmoor Winter Traverse
The Dartmoor Winter Traverse is a challenge event through the remote moors of Devon during the winter season. Participants can choose between two off-road distances that are open to both runners and walkers:
- 50 km: A journey from South to North across Dartmoor.
- 30 km: A route starting in Princetown and finishing in Meldon.
The 50 km route traverses wild areas of open moorland, passing landmarks such as Red Lake and the sources of the rivers Erme and Plym. After reaching Princetown, the path continues through wild North Moor locations including Roos Tor, Tavy Cleave, and Chat Tor. The final section follows the Rattlebrook dismantled railway before descending to the finish at Meldon. The 30 km distance follows the same line as the longer route from Princetown onwards.
The course features difficult terrain underfoot and is almost entirely off-road without way markings. Participants must rely on navigation using provided GPX files or recommended maps. Qualified Mountain Leaders and experienced guides are stationed on the course to assist with navigation and provide first aid cover.
This is a supported challenge event rather than a race, featuring generous cut-off times at the final checkpoint. Mandatory kit requirements are outlined in participant handbooks. Optional coach transport is available to take participants from the finish area to the start line before the event begins. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
