Dartmoor Winter Traverse
The Dartmoor Winter Traverse is a fully supported challenge across Dartmoor, open to runners and walkers. The event follows a south to north line across remote moorland and is almost entirely off road on largely unmarked terrain.
- 50 km (approximately 30 miles) from South to North
- 30 km from Princetown to Meldon, same line from Princetown
The route passes Red Lake and the sources of the rivers Erme and Plym, includes a break at Princetown, then continues through Roos Tor, Tavy Cleave and Chat Tor. The final section uses the Rattlebrook dismantled railway before descending to the finish at Meldon.
February weather, limited daylight and difficult underfoot terrain are noted factors for this winter event. Organisers provide a GPX file and an Outdoor Active route; they recommend using it alongside OL 28 Dartmoor (1:25,000) or BMC Dartmoor (1:40,000) maps. Full information on mandatory and suggested kit appears in the participant handbook. Entry fees include GPS tracker hire.
A team of qualified Mountain Leaders and experienced guides will patrol the course to assist with navigation and provide first aid. The event is run as a challenge rather than a race; cut off times at the final checkpoint are generous and coach transport is available to take participants from the end to the start before the event. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
