Dartmoor Volcano Race
The Dartmoor Volcano Race is a 10.5 mile, fully marked and marshaled trail race across southern Dartmoor. The route visits high points including Pupers Hill, Snowdon and Ryders Hill (about 515 m) and passes the Red Lake Volcano. The course traverses rocky, boggy and occasionally technical terrain and includes river crossings, a clapper bridge, two bog sections and a volcano ascent, with over 550 metres of ascent in total.
The event starts and finishes in the village of Scorriton, TQ11 0JB, and has a field limit of 250 runners. An aid station is located around 6.3 miles offering drinks and a small selection of snacks. Qualified paramedics provide first aid cover and marshals and sweepers monitor the course; anyone withdrawing must report to a marshal.
A mandatory kit list is required because the route goes into remote moorland with limited vehicle access. Required items include trail running shoes, a backpack or waistpack, whistle, foil survival blanket, waterproof jacket, headcover, a mobile phone with emergency numbers stored, and capacity to carry 250 ml of liquid; participants are cupless so should bring a collapsible cup or bottle. Finishers receive a bespoke medal and the top three men and women receive trophies. The race is held under UKA rules and licensed by the Trail Running Association with permission of Dartmoor National Park Authority and the landowners.
