Event overview

The Dartmoor Volcano Race is a trail event held on the edge of Dartmoor in the village of Scoriton (TQ11 0JB). The course is approximately 10.5 miles long and includes over 550 metres of ascent. The route touches southern Dartmoor’s high point, Ryder’s Hill, and passes the Red Lake Volcano area. The minimum age on race day is 17 and the field is limited to 250 entrants.

Course and logistics

The route is fully marked and marshaled and follows rough moorland tracks and trails with rocky and boggy sections. Course features listed include 3 river crossings, 1 clapper bridge crossing, 2 bogs, a volcano ascent, a long uphill start and a long downhill finish. An aid station around 6.3 miles offers drinks and a small selection of snacks. Parking is provided in a field about 300 m from the village hall. Finishers receive a bespoke medal and trophies are awarded to the first three male and female finishers. Event t-shirts are available to purchase.

Safety, kit and rules

Qualified paramedics will attend the event. The race is run under UKA rules and licensed by the Trail Running Association with permission from Dartmoor National Park Authority and land owners. A mandatory kit list is enforced; required items include trail running shoes, a backpack or waistpack, whistle, foil/survival blanket, waterproof jacket, headcover, a mobile phone with an emergency contact stored, and the capacity to carry at least 250 ml of liquid.
