Dartmoor Volcano Race
The Dartmoor Volcano Race is a 10.5 mile trail event around the southern moor, starting and finishing in the village of Scoriton, TQ11 0JB. The course includes over 550 metres of ascent and visits high points such as Pupers Hill, Snowdon and Ryders Hill, and it passes the Red Lake Volcano.
The fully marked and marshaled route crosses rivers and bogs and traverses rocky, frequently technical terrain. Specific course features include three river crossings, one clapper bridge crossing, two bogs, a volcano ascent, a long uphill section at the start and a long downhill finish. An aid station is located at about 6.3 miles providing drinks and a small selection of snacks.
There is a limit of 250 entrants. A mandatory kit list is required because the route goes into remote moorland; required items include trail running shoes, a backpack or waistpack, a whistle, a foil survival blanket, a waterproof jacket, headcover, a mobile phone with emergency numbers stored and the capacity to carry 250 ml of liquid. Participants are advised that feet will get wet and that river levels and boggy conditions can vary.
Bespoke medals are provided for all finishers and event t shirts are available to purchase. The minimum age on race day is 17 years. The event is organised under national running rules and with permission of the land owners and the park authority. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
