Dartmoor Volcano Race
The Dartmoor Volcano Race is a fully marked and marshaled 10.5 mile trail event across the southern moor. The route visits Pupers Hill, Snowdon and Ryder's Hill, and includes the ascent of the Red Lake Volcano, with over 550 metres of ascent reported. The course runs on rough moorland tracks and trails and features rocky and boggy terrain that can be technical underfoot.
The route includes three river crossings, one clapper bridge crossing, two bog sections, a long uphill start and a long downhill finish. An aid station is located about 6.3 miles along the course offering drinks and a small selection of snacks. Qualified paramedics provide first aid cover and marshals and sweepers monitor the route; runners who withdraw must report to a marshal.
The race starts and finishes in the village of Scorriton, TQ11 0JB, on the edge of Dartmoor, about four miles from the A38 Buckfastleigh/Ashburton junction. Parking is provided in a field approximately 300 metres from the village hall with only blue badge disabled parking at the hall itself. Entry is limited to 250 runners and the minimum age on race day is 17 years.
Mandatory kit is required and checked. Required items include trail running shoes, a backpack or waistpack, whistle, foil survival blanket, waterproof jacket, headcover, a mobile phone and capacity to carry 250 ml of liquid. Bespoke finisher medals are awarded and event t-shirts are available for purchase. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
