Dartmoor Volcano Race

The Dartmoor Volcano Race is a 10.5-mile trail running event held on the southern edge of Dartmoor National Park. The course starts and finishes in the village of Scorriton and consists entirely of off-road terrain, including rough moorland tracks and trails. Runners navigate a route that includes approximately 650 meters of total ascent.

The high-level course passes through several natural features and landmarks. Participants reach Ryder's Hill, which is the highest point in southern Dartmoor at 515 meters. A central element of the event is the ascent of the Red Lake Volcano. The terrain is characterized by rocky and boggy sections that require technical navigation.

Key features of the route include:

  • 10.5 miles of trail through moorland and technical terrain.
  • Three separate river crossings and one crossing over a Clapper Bridge.
  • Two boggy sections and a primary ascent of the Red Lake Volcano.
  • A long uphill section at the start and a long downhill stretch to the finish line.

The event is held under Trail Running Association guidelines and UKA rules, with permission from the Dartmoor National Park Authority. The course is fully marked and marshaled. Participants must be at least 17 years old on the day of the race. All finishers receive a bespoke medal, and event t-shirts are available for purchase. Due to insurance and permit limitations, dogs are not permitted on the course. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
