Dartmoor Volcano Race - 11 September 2027
The Dartmoor Volcano Race is a fully marked and marshaled trail race of 10.5 miles on the southern edge of Dartmoor, with over 550 metres of ascent. The course follows the usual anti-clockwise route and starts and finishes in the village of Scoriton (TQ11 0JB) on the edge of Dartmoor. Entry is limited to 250 runners.
The route visits high points including Pupers Hill, Snowdon and Ryders Hill and passes the Red Lake Volcano. The course includes tor-topping sections, boggy terrain and multiple river crossings. Notable course features listed by the organiser are three river crossings, one clapper bridge crossing, two bogs, a volcano ascent, a long uphill start and a long downhill finish. An aid station is located about 6.3 miles on the route and offers drinks and a small selection of snacks.
Because the route goes into remote moorland there is a mandatory kit list and a quick kit check at registration. Mandatory items include trail running shoes, a backpack or waistpack, whistle, foil survival blanket, waterproof jacket, headcover, a mobile phone with emergency numbers stored and the capacity to carry 250 ml of liquid; participants should bring a collapsible cup or water bottle as the event is cupless. Qualified paramedics will attend and marshals and sweepers will monitor runners; anyone withdrawing must report to a marshal.
Supporters are asked to keep dogs on a lead and dogs are not permitted to run with owners. The race is run under UK Athletics rules, licensed by the Trail Running Association and operates with permission from Dartmoor National Park Authority and land owners. Finishers receive bespoke medals; bespoke t-shirts are available to purchase and trophies are awarded to the first three male and female finishers. Results are published online within 24 hours.
