Dartmoor Volcano Race
The Dartmoor Volcano Race is a fully marked and marshaled trail race of 10.5 miles on the southern moor with over 550 metres of ascent. The route visits high points on the moor including Pupers Hill, Snowdon and Ryders Hill, and passes the Red Lake Volcano. The 2027 edition takes place on Saturday 11th September and follows the usual anti-clockwise route, with a limit of 250 entrants.
The course crosses rivers and moorland terrain and includes tor-topping, boggy sections and river crossings. Notable course features listed by the organiser include three river crossings, one clapper bridge crossing, two bogs, a volcano ascent, a long uphill opening section and a long downhill finish. An aid station at about 6.3 miles provides drinks and a small selection of snacks. Qualified paramedics from Peninsula Medical are listed as providing first aid cover.
The race starts and finishes in the village of Scoriton (village hall TQ11 0JB). Parking is provided in a field approximately 300 metres from the hall. Event t-shirts and technical running clothing are available for purchase, and bespoke medals are awarded to all finishers with trophies for the first three male and female finishers. Results are posted online within 24 hours.
Mandatory kit is required and checked at registration. Required items include trail running shoes, backpack or waistpack, whistle, foil/survival blanket, waterproof jacket, headcover (cap or buff), a mobile phone with emergency number stored and capacity to carry at least 250 ml of liquid; participants are cupless and should bring a cup or bottle. Supporters are asked to keep dogs on a lead and dogs are not permitted to run with competitors. The race is run under UKA rules, licensed by the Trail Running Association and held with permission of Dartmoor National Park Authority and the land owners.
