Dartmoor in a Day Ultra
Dartmoor in a Day is a cross-country challenge event that runs across Dartmoor with two distance options. The full route starts at Okehampton, passes through Postbridge and finishes in Ivybridge. Notable features on the route include the East Okement valley, Hangingstone Hill, the East Dart valley, Bellever Tor, West Dart stepping stones, Ryder’s Hill, a clapper bridge over the upper Avon river, the Dartmoor Volcano and views along the Erme valley out to sea.
The event offers two distance options:
- 50 km (approx 30 miles) from Okehampton to Ivybridge
- 30 km starting at Postbridge and following the remainder of the 50 km route
The route is almost entirely off road and runs mainly across wild areas of open moor. The event is described as a challenge rather than just a race, with generous cut off times at the final checkpoint and transport to the finish available for those who cannot complete the distance. Participants are supported by qualified Mountain Leaders who act as mobile marshals and help with route choice; runners and walkers may be accompanied by leaders if they wish.
Maps for use with the Outdoor Active app can be downloaded and a GPX file is available. The organiser recommends carrying OL 28 Dartmoor or BMC Dartmoor maps and provides full kit information in participant handbooks. Checkpoints with refreshments are located at Postbridge and Combestone Tor. Both events finish at Ivybridge Community College where finishers collect a memento and food and drink are available.
