Coniston Fell Race

The Coniston Fell Race is a classic Lakeland event covering a distance of 14 km (8.7 miles) with a total ascent of 1,065 m (3,494 ft). The course features steep and rough terrain, including ridge running and several summit checkpoints within the Lake District.

Participants must navigate to the following summits:

  • Wetherlam
  • Swirl How
  • The Old Man of Coniston

This event is categorized as an AM race and is held under Fell Runners Association (FRA) rules. Registration and kit checks take place at the Coniston Institute. All participants must be aged 18 or older and must possess fell-running experience, along with the ability to use a map and compass accurately for navigation. The use of GPS devices for navigation or running poles is not permitted.

Specific safety kit is required for all runners, including a waterproof jacket and trousers with taped seams, a whistle, a hat, gloves, emergency food, and a suitable map and compass. A strict 90-minute cut-off time is enforced at Swirl Hause.

Parking is available at Coniston CE Primary School for a cash fee, with proceeds benefiting the school. All proceeds from race entries are donated to the Coniston Mountain Rescue Team.
