Event Overview

The Coniston Fell Race is a classic Lakeland event covering approximately 14 km (8.7 miles) with 1,065 metres of total ascent. The course is characterized by steep and rough terrain, featuring ridge running and a choice of lines on the final descent. The route includes checkpoints on the summits of Wetherlam, Swirl How, and the Old Man of Coniston.

Participation Requirements

This race is open to runners aged 18 or older. All participants must have prior fell-running experience and the ability to use a map and compass accurately for navigation. GPS devices are not permitted for navigation purposes under FRA rules, except in emergencies. Running or walking poles are also prohibited. There is an entry limit of 300 runners, and no entries are accepted on the day of the event.

Equipment and Safety

A mandatory kit check is conducted for all runners. Required equipment includes:

  • Waterproof jacket and trousers with taped seams
  • Map and compass suitable for the course
  • Whistle
  • Hat and gloves
  • Emergency food

A strictly enforced 90-minute cut-off point is located at Swirl Hause (GR 27800075).

Facilities and Logistics

Registration takes place at the Coniston Institute. Parking is available at Coniston CE Primary School for a cash fee, with proceeds benefiting the school. The venue offers water at the finish line, and refreshments such as tea, coffee, and cakes are available for purchase at the Institute.
