Trail Running in Illinois
The CMAR Trail Races take place at Camp Wokanda in Chillicothe, Illinois. The event features a variety of distances held on the Illinois River Bluff Trail, characterized by wooded single track under a forest canopy. The terrain consists of rolling hills and "shark bite" climbs with technical elements including rocks, roots, and ruts.
Participants can choose from four distinct distance options:
- 100 Miles: Consists of four 25-mile loops with approximately 18,500 feet of elevation gain.
- 50 Miles: Consists of two 25-mile loops with approximately 9,300 feet of elevation gain.
- 50K: An out-and-back course with nearly 6,500 feet of total elevation gain.
- Half Marathon-ish: Includes a loop in Camp Wokanda and an out-and-back section to an aid station.
The 100-mile distance allows pacers after the first 50 miles. As a cupless event, runners are required to bring their own hydration vessels. Several aid stations are positioned along the course, providing water, electrolyte drinks, and various food options.
Race headquarters is located at The Lodge, which serves as the start and finish point. Facilities include flushing bathrooms with running water at specific points on the course and shower houses at the camp. Free camping is available for participants in designated areas at Camp Wokanda, though RVs and trailers are not permitted. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
