Clemson 8 Challenge
Clemson, United States • 7 Mar 2026
Event Overview
The Clemson 8 Challenge is a combined in-person and virtual event honoring the history of the Bataan Death March and Clemson alumni who were prisoners of war. It supports Clemson University's Military-Affiliated student organizations, with all proceeds going to related scholarships. The event period spans from March 7 to April 9, 2026.
Event Format and Activities
The event features an in-person, officially timed race on Saturday, March 7, 2026, on the Clemson University campus. A virtual challenge runs concurrently from March 7-14, 2026. Participants can complete their chosen activity—run, walk, bike, hike, swim, or ski—either on the campus course or on their own route. High school JROTC teams have until April 9, 2026, to complete their challenge.
The event includes several categories:
- 800 Meter Kids Run/Walk/Stroll (for ages 10 and under)
- 8 K or 8 Mile - Race Day (for the general public and a separate category for college students & younger)
- 8 Mile - Race Day 35-lb. ROTC Ruckers
- 8 Mile Relay Virtual Challenge (for High School JROTC/P.E. Class)
- 8, 14.2 & 26.2 Mile - Virtual (for the general public)
Course and Logistics
The in-person race starts and finishes at Military Heritage Plaza next to Tillman Hall on the Clemson University campus. The 8-mile campus course uses sidewalks and follows pedestrian laws. Participants have until a cutoff time to finish for an official result. Water and portable restrooms are available at the start/finish area and along the course.
A participant packet includes a 100% cotton Comfort Colors t-shirt, a wooden "challenge coin," a race bib, and a window decal. In 2026, every race day participant will have a chance to win swag from the Bataan Memorial Death March Marathon in New Mexico.
Background and Purpose
The challenge was created so that the late Colonel (Honorary Brigadier General) Beverly N. "Ben" Skardon, a Bataan Death March survivor and Clemson alumnus, could continue his annual pilgrimage to honor his fellow soldiers. The "8" represents the approximate miles he walked each year in the memorial march. The fundraising goal for 2026 is $19,420, referencing the year 1942 when the Death March occurred.
