The Cactus Classic Trail Races are trail running events held in Sand Ridge State Forest near Manito, Illinois. The 2026 edition marks the 16th anniversary of the event.

Course Details

The course takes place on the trails of Sand Ridge State Forest, starting and finishing at the Oak Campground. The trails run through pine forests and consist of loose, sandy soil, similar to running on a beach. The terrain includes many flat, runnable sections and several rolling sections. The event is named for the variety of cactus that grows wild throughout the park.

Trail runs nearby

A multi-distance trail event at McNaughton Park in Pekin, Illinois on April 9 to 12, 2026. Runners do 10 mile loops of single-track, prairies, creek crossings and rolling hills with aid stations and on-site primitive camping.

Trail races of 5 km and 10 km at Wildlife Prairie Park near Hanna City, IL, with park admission included. The event features water stations, post-race snacks, awards by overall and age groups, and a member discount.

An ultrarunning weekend at Sand Ridge State Forest offering 200K, 50K, and a 10K option, camping, flexible cutoffs, and awards including challenge coins and buckles. Registration closes August 25, 2026.
