Butcombe Trail Ultra

Butcombe Trail Ultra is a pair of self navigation ultramarathons held on 17 April 2027 in the Mendip Hills AONB, based at Mendip Activity Centre near Churchill. The route follows mostly off road trails and visits pubs along the way on a course that criss crosses the Mendips and runs anti clockwise from the race headquarters.

Distances:

  • 50 miles self navigation ultramarathon
  • 50 km self navigation ultramarathon

Entries open 10 May 2026 and close 3 April 2027. Entry fees vary by date: initial, mid and late entry prices are listed for each distance, and affiliated athletes receive a £2 discount. Minimum age to enter is 20 on the event date. The 50 miles race requires prior completion of a trail marathon since 1 January 2026; the 50 km race has no strict prior-race requirement, but runners must be confident in self navigation.

Both races are UTMB index qualifying events, with the 50 miles as a 100 km index race and the 50 km as a 50 km index race. The event is organised by volunteer members of Town and Country Harriers to benefit the Mendip Hills Fund; past proceeds donated to the fund exceed £20,000. Race rules include mandatory kit, a restriction on headphones with both earpieces removed at checkpoints and marshalled road crossings, pacer and guide runner provisions, and a pregnancy refund policy.
