Butcombe Trail Ultra

The Butcombe Trail Ultra is a pair of self-navigation ultramarathons held on Saturday 25 April 2026 from a race HQ at Mendip Activity Centre in the Mendip Hills AONB. The events follow mostly off road trails and run around pubs and other features of the Mendips, with the 2026 races routed anti-clockwise from the race HQ.

The official Butcombe Trail is a longstanding 47 mile route; the event uses similar country and views. The races are organised by Town and Country Harriers and are volunteer run. Both distances are UTMB index races: the 50 mile as a 100 km index race and the 50 km as a 50 km index race.

Entry fees are listed per distance and include a £5 increase that will fund the use of tracking devices for more accurate timing, spectator tracking and improved safety. The event has an age minimum of 20 years. For the 50 mile race, applicants should have run a trail marathon by the race date since 1 January 2025; the 50 km has no specific recent result requirement but requires confidence in self navigation.

Event rules note that headphones are discouraged and must be removed at checkpoints and marshalled road crossings, mandatory kit must be carried, one pacer is allowed from the final checkpoint, guide runners may register free and receive a finisher medal, and pregnancy notifications receive a full refund. Proceeds support the Mendip Hills Fund. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
