The route begins near Centennial Park and follows the Arkansas River, passes through the granite-blasted Tunnel Drive tunnels, and climbs to a high point at 7,109 feet with views of the Royal Gorge, the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, and Pikes Peak. Runners travel rolling singletrack through Royal Gorge Mountain Park, cross what is described as the highest bridge in the United States, and descend through Temple Canyon.

Elevation gain varies by distance, from about 575 feet for the 10K up to about 4,400 feet for the longest course. Aid stations are noted as well stocked and include Tailwind, Muir Energy gels, banana bread, sweet and salty snacks, fruit, soda, and warm food options such as bacon, quesadillas, potatoes, and pierogis. Crewing is allowed only at crew-accessible aid stations and pacing is prohibited.
