Boyers Furnace

Boyers Furnace is a minimally marked, counter-clockwise loop of 40.3 miles through the Massanutten Mountains around the southern half of Fort Valley. The route passes the stone ruins of Boyer’s Furnace roughly halfway along a dirt-road section near the George Washington National Forest boundary. Total ascent and descent on the course is about 6,500 feet.

The course combines ridgeline single-track and rolling road sections, including long technical stretches on the Massanutten East and West ridgelines and nontechnical road approaches back to the Camp Roosevelt parking area. The route follows parts of the Old Dominion and Massanutten Mountain Trail corridors and is best followed with a turnsheet, map, or GPX file; markings on course are minimal.

There are three staffed aid stations located at approximately miles 17, 23, and 31. Aid stations are stocked in part by items supplied by participants; each runner is asked to bring one shared item and may provide labeled personal food bags for station use. Runners should carry enough food and water for the initial 17-mile section and be prepared for winter mountain conditions. There are suggested and hard cutoffs; runners expected to take more than ten hours should carry illumination for the final road sections.

This event operates without on-course medical personnel. Participants are responsible for their own health, safety, and emergency plans. Entry will be limited to 75 runners, with a specified opening date for registration. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
