The Blackdown Beast : event overview

The Blackdown Beast is a social, self-navigated cross-country run held from the Skydive Centre at Dunkeswell Airfield on Saturday, 24th January 2026. The event raises money for Macmillan Cancer Support; in 2024 the event raised over £4,000. Entry includes route following and refreshments at village halls and pubs along the way. Dogs are not allowed on the route.

Route and logistics

The route uses footpaths, lanes and country paths across the Blackdown Hills and crosses the River Otter. The first leg runs to Smeatharpe, where pasties and mulled wine are provided at Smeatharpe Village Hall. The next leg drops to Upottery and the Sidmouth Arms. The longer route continues via Rawridge, climbs to a viewpoint above Luppitt, and runs to Luppitt Village Hall, where a refreshment stop may operate and cash is required. The final section returns across Luppitt Common to Dunkeswell for refreshments at the Aviation Cafe; cash and card are accepted there. Minibus transport is provided to return the 10 mile option to Dunkeswell; runners must select the 10 mile option on the entry form.
