Big Timber XC Challenge
The Big Timber XC Challenge is a trail running event at Camp Big Timber, Big Timber Road at Tyrrell Road, Elgin, IL, held on Sunday, November 8, 2026. The event offers multiple distances and a kids fun run. Parking at the camp is limited and carpooling is encouraged.
Distances:
- 3 miles One loop of the perimeter trail.
- 5 miles Two loops of the perimeter trail.
- Kids Fun Run Short grass course, ages 10 and younger.
The course runs on gravel driveways, open grass areas, wide mowed pathways through woods, and short single-track dirt sections. The route includes a creek crossing of about 15 feet across; water depth will vary with recent weather and can range from ankle to knee deep. Participants should expect uneven ground, exposed roots, rocks, low branches, wet or marshy sections, and the possibility of snow or ice. Registered entrants in the 3- and 5-mile races receive a shirt and a pancake breakfast prepared by Scout volunteers; Kids Fun Run entries receive a short sleeve t-shirt and breakfast. Participants who register by October 14 may choose special flannel swag; later registrants receive a printed long-sleeve tech shirt subject to size availability.
The event is part of the DPA Darn Tough Trail Race Series and serves as the final race for the 4 Seasons Challenge award. Proceeds benefit the Boy Scouts of America Three Fires Council and the Boys & Girls Club of Elgin. Awards, age-group prizes, and a raffle are included.
