Big Timber XC Challenge

The Big Timber XC Challenge takes place Sunday, November 8, 2026 at Camp Big Timber in Elgin, Illinois. The event offers two main distances and a Kids Fun Run for children 10 years and younger.

• 3 miles One loop around the perimeter trail.
• 5 miles Two loops of the same perimeter trail.

The course uses gravel driveways, open grass areas, wide mowed grass pathways, and a few short stretches of single-track dirt trail. Runners will encounter uneven ground, exposed tree roots, rocks, low-hanging branches, wet or marshy sections, and a creek crossing approximately 15 feet wide; water depth may vary from ankle to knee depending on recent weather. The Kids Fun Run runs on grass and does not cross the creek.

All registered participants receive a shirt and a pancake breakfast prepared and served by Scouts. Kids Fun Run entrants receive a short sleeve t-shirt and breakfast. Participants who register by October 14 can choose a flannel shirt or flannel pants with a race patch; later registrants receive a printed long-sleeve tech shirt with no guaranteed size. Parking at Camp Big Timber is limited and carpooling is encouraged.

The event is part of the Dick Pond Athletics Darn Tough Trail Series. Sponsors include Dick Pond Athletics, Saucony, Pollyanna Brewing, and Darn Tough. Proceeds benefit the Boy Scouts of America Three Fires Council and the Boys & Girls Club of Elgin. Awards and age group prizes are given and raffle entrants must be present to claim prizes.
