Beara Way Challenge

The Beara Way Challenge is a mountain running event held in County Cork. The race follows a route through open mountain terrain and the Beara Way walking trail, offering views of the surrounding sea. The event is part of the Munster Half-Marathon League and is conducted as a single race distance:

  • 23.50 km with 1100 meters of total ascent.

The course begins near Castletownbere town centre on the Derrintaggert Road. Participants follow the Beara Way markers toward Eyeries and Allihies before ascending Knockoura Mountain. After reaching the summit, the route descends back onto the walking trail. The course then leads toward Mish Kish mountain, where runners must follow specific markers to the summit before descending to return to the finish line in Castletownbere.

The route is fully marked, and the use of GPS devices is permitted. Due to the nature of the terrain and elevation, specific mandatory safety equipment is required for all participants. This kit includes a waterproof jacket, hat or buff, gloves, a whistle, a charged mobile phone with emergency numbers, and a foil blanket or bivvy bag. Because of the potential for high temperatures, carrying water is also mandatory.

Race registration takes place in Castletownbere Town Centre. Prizes are awarded to the top three male and female finishers. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
