MTC POOKA : event description

The MTC POOKA is a single day ultra running event covering 38 miles. It is the first day of the Mount to Coast MizMal end to end of Ireland, a fourteen day series, and mainly follows the MizMal route as provided by Wild Atlantic Cycling. The route starts on Mizen Road, Cloghane, Goleen and finishes at the Eccles Hotel in Glengarriff.

Entries are limited to 20 race-only competitors plus an additional allowance of 20 MizMal competitors, for a maximum of 40 runners. All finishers receive a bespoke POOKA medal and male and female champions receive trophies. The event is cup free; competitors should bring a reusable cup.

Organisers apply a minimum average pace of 4.0 mph with preset cutoffs at intermediate checkpoints. Checkpoints and distances include CP1 at 8.7 miles, CP2 at 17.5 miles, and CP3 at 27.1 miles. Mapping and GPX files and real time tracking are provided to entrants; tracking devices include SOS capability.

Mandatory kit includes a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, maps as provided, compass or GPS device, whistle, mobile phone, basic first aid and an emergency food pack. Entrants must be at least 20 years old. Entry fees are non refundable; a plus package option includes a race shirt and hi viz jacket. A 161 km, 5,500 m ascent ultramarathon on the Beara Way with a 37-hour time limit, start and finish in Castletownbere. Fully marked route with mandatory Level C kit, four drop-bag points and staffed aid stations.

A 70 km mountain ultra around Castletownbere on the Beara Way with significant ascent, manned aid stations, and Level C mandatory kit. The route passes Eyeries and Allihies and allows one drop bag per runner.

A 23.5 km mountain half marathon in County Cork with about 1100 m ascent. The fully marked 2026 route follows the Beara Way, summits Mish Kish and Knockoura, and returns to Castletownbere.

Trail running on Cape Clear Island in West Cork on 29 August 2026, offering Half Marathon and 10 km courses with optional chartered ferry from Baltimore or independent transport options.
