MTC POOKA : Overview

The MTC POOKA is a single-day ultra run held on 7th May 2027. It is the first edition and forms Day 1 of the MTC MizMal® fourteen-day end-to-end of Ireland within the Mount to Coast End to End Challenge series. The race distance is 38 miles. The route follows much of the MizMal® route as provided by Wild Atlantic Cycling, starting at Mizen Road, Cloghane, Goleen and finishing at the Eccles Hotel, Glengarriff. Total ascent is 830.8 metres and total descent is 892.5 metres. Competitor numbers are limited to 20 race entries plus an additional allowance of 20 MizMal® competitors, for a maximum of 40 participants.

Logistics, kit and rules

The event uses preset cut-off points based on a minimum average speed of 4.0 mph; competitors who fall below this requirement will be withdrawn. Maps and GPX files are provided only to entrants and are emailed about four weeks before the event. Each competitor receives a tracking device with an SOS function for real-time monitoring. The race is cup-free; competitors must bring their own reusable cup.

Mandatory kit includes a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, route maps, compass or GPS device, whistle, mobile phone, basic first aid and emergency food. Entry fees are non-refundable: standard entry £90, or the Plus Race Package at £155 (includes embroidered race shirt and lightweight hi-viz jacket if ordered at least four weeks before the event). All finishers receive a POOKA medal; male and female champions receive bespoke trophies. Entrants must be at least 20 years old and carry the mandatory kit to start.
