MTC Pooka

Goleen, Ireland • 7 May 2027

Event Overview

The MTC Pooka is a 38-mile ultramarathon. It starts on Mizen Road, Cloghane, Goleen, and finishes at the Eccles Hotel in Glengarriff, Ireland. The route largely follows the MizMal route provided by Wild Atlantic Cycling. It is also Day 1 of the 14-day Mount to Coast (MTC) MizMal End to End Challenge of Ireland. Competitors in the Pooka will run alongside those undertaking the full multi-day challenge.

Course and Rules

The race has a strict pace requirement: participants must maintain a minimum average speed of 4 miles per hour. Checkpoints have cut-off times based on this pace, and runners falling below it risk being withdrawn from the race. The event is "cup-free," meaning runners must bring their own reusable cup. Competitor numbers are limited to 40 (20 for the standalone Pooka and an additional 20 for the full MizMal challenge). The course has approximately 831 meters of ascent and 893 meters of descent.

Logistics and Equipment

Maps and GPX files are provided to entrants approximately four weeks before the event. Each runner will be given a tracking device with an SOS button. A mandatory kit list includes a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, maps, compass or GPS device, whistle, mobile phone, and a basic first aid kit.

Entry and Rewards

Entry costs £90. An upgraded "Plus Race Package" (£155) includes an embroidered race shirt and a hi-viz jacket. All finishers receive a bespoke Pooka medal, and male and female champions receive a bespoke race trophy. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
