Cape Clear Island Races
The Cape Clear Island Races take place on Cape Clear Island off West Cork, Ireland. The event uses chartered ferries from Baltimore to bring runners to and from the island; the return ferry is included with the race ticket and only two race boats are available, so the number of participants is limited.
There are two race distances:
- Half Marathon
- 10 km
Routes combine paved lanes, single-track island trails, steep climbs and rolling descents. Some sections offer views toward the Fastnet Lighthouse located about 6 km away. The course crosses quiet country lanes and rough island paths that show the island landscape.
Organisers provide a medal ceremony on the island with music and a celebratory drink in the island pub beer garden after the race. Runners may also travel to the island independently if not using the race ferry; those who choose this option must arrive well before the race start.
Mandatory kit for participants includes trail shoes, waterproof jacket, foil blanket, whistle, waist or backpack, a fully charged mobile phone and emergency food.
Travel to West Cork is commonly via Cork airport or Cork City with a drive to Baltimore. Accommodation options are available both on Cape Clear Island and in Baltimore and Skibbereen, including glamping, guest houses, hotels, B&Bs and self-catering cottages.
