Back Cove Backyard Ultra

Portland, United States • 11 Jul 2026

Back Cove Backyard Ultra, July 11, 2026

The event follows the backyard ultra format. Participants run a roughly 4.16 mile loop each hour and repeat laps until only one runner remains. The race takes place at Back Cove Park in Portland, ME.

The loop is primarily a 3.5 mile non-technical gravel trail with a short paved bridge crossing along a tidal estuary. A 0.60 mile add-on on the Bayside Trail at the start/finish area brings each lap to the standard backyard ultra distance. The route is mostly flat and offers views along the length of the estuary.

Two aid stations serve participants. An unstaffed station in Payson Park provides water, basic first aid supplies, and packaged snacks. A staffed station at the start/finish offers water, electrolytes, packaged and prepared snacks, and basic first aid. Event personnel remain at the start/finish for the duration, and there is space for small tents or canopies and for leaving drop bags. Porta potties are available in Payson Park and at the start/finish. Parking is free in the public lot adjacent to the start/finish on a first come, first served basis.

Organizers describe the event as a local, low-cost race supported by volunteers and offering minimal swag. Refunds are not issued except for extraordinary circumstances at the organizers discretion. A pregnancy deferral is available for use in a subsequent year. Registration closes July 8, 2026. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
