Trail Running in Babcock State Park
The Babcock Gristmill Grinder is a trail running event held annually each spring in West Virginia. The event takes place within Babcock State Park, offering participants the opportunity to run through deep forest scenery and view the Glade Creek canyon. The terrain includes spring wildflowers and various natural landmarks within the park boundaries.
The event offers two distinct distances for participants:
- Half marathon trail run
- 5K run and walk
The half marathon course begins with a road section that leads into a downhill stretch before transitioning onto single track trails. The route is characterized by steep climbs and long, gradual downhill sections. Due to the nature of the start, participants often maintain a fast pace on the initial road portion to secure a position before entering the narrower trail segments.
The 5K distance is designed as an out and back route that travels to the Gristmill and returns. This course is divided into a sustained downhill section followed by an entirely uphill return leg. This shorter distance is open to both runners and walkers.
The event has been held for over twenty years and utilizes trails that undergo specific maintenance and work in preparation for the race. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
