Art O'Neill Challenge

The Art O'Neill events take place on January 16, 2026, and start from Dublin Castle with routes into the Wicklow hills. The series is organised by and solely for the benefit of Dublin & Wicklow Mountain Rescue. The events are supported on the route, with Dublin & Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team available should help be needed.

  • AON Challenge: 60 km on road and open mountain to Glenmalure.
  • AON Pursuit: 25 km road race to Kippure Estate, runners only.

Each event is limited to 200 entries. Challenge places are decided by ballot. Registration for the ballot requires a non refundable payment of €5. Ballot entries open in October 2025 and close on 11 October 2025, with offers sent by email around 15 October; successful applicants are given one week to accept their place. Challenge entries are not transferable and refunds are not allowed; deferral for one year may be possible in exceptional circumstances by prior agreement.

The AON Challenge retraces a historic escape from Dublin Castle to Glenmalure in January 1592. During that escape at least one person died from exposure. The Challenge route includes road sections and open mountain terrain and is open to both runners and walkers. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
