Event Overview

The 1/2 Sauer 1/2 Kraut is a running event featuring a half marathon and a full marathon. It takes place in Pennypack Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Course Details

The course uses a paved bike path along Pennypack Creek within the park. It is mostly shaded and described as mostly flat, with a midsection featuring short, steep rolling hills and a trail section. The route is entirely within the city limits but has no vehicle traffic.

Race Day Information

The start and finish area is the Ed Kelly Amphitheater at Pennypack Park. Parking is free in the park or nearby neighborhood. Packet and bib pickup is on race day only at the amphitheater, starting at 6:30 AM. The start time is 7:30 AM. There are 13 aid stations on the full marathon course and 6 on the half marathon course. One station is designated the Oktoberfest Aid Station. Gatorade will be available at all stations. Energy gels are provided at specific miles for the full marathon.

Awards and Extras

Every finisher receives a medal. Overall winners receive German cuckoo clocks, and age group awards are German weather houses. A post-race party with live German music and performances begins around 10:00 AM. The entry fee includes a non-alcoholic beer and a bratwurst sandwich. There is a costume contest with extra awards for Bavarian attire.

Important Notes

The event is held in June, and high temperatures are possible. The race director states the marathon is recommended only for experienced runners familiar with summer running and hydration. A time limit of 6 hours and 30 minutes applies to both distances. The race director reserves the right to defer all runners to the half marathon based on temperature conditions.
