WAI2K 50K Ultra : event overview
The WAI2K 50km is an ultra trail run linking the Wairarapa and Upper Hutt across varied terrain. The course begins at Woodside train station and finishes at the Upper Picnic area, and features a mix of gravel road, single track, mud, river crossings, tunnels, bridges, and open forestry trails. The route includes substantial vertical gain (around 2600 m estimated) with much of the climbing concentrated in the first half.
Aid stations are positioned along the course (approximately at 9 km, 24 km, 30 km, 38 km, 43 km and 46 km) and supply water, Neversecond nutrition, coke, sweets, chips, biscuits, sandwiches, fruit, sunblock, first aid, sanitiser and sanitary products. There are public toilets at the start and at several aid stations.
Organisers require a set of compulsory items, including a fully equipped first aid kit, emergency bag or blanket, seam-sealed windproof/waterproof jacket, thermal long-sleeve top, gloves, thermal hat, race vest or pack with at least 1 L water capacity, food, compass or GPS, topo maps on a mobile device, whistle, a fully charged mobile device and a hi-vis vest for the morning road section. Drop bags may be taken from the start to the finish area.
Race entries are limited per category. Competitors receive a briefing pack before race weekend and are subject to strict cut-off points on course; runners who miss cut-offs will be transported to the finish area. Transport options are coordinated for return to the start area and there is parking at the start. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
