MAS*H Backyard Ultra
MAS*H Backyard Ultra is an endurance running event held at Queen Elizabeth Park over Wellington Anniversary Weekend, with Base Camp beside the Ramaroa Centre at Mackays Crossing, about 45 km north of Wellington City. Enlistment opens on 1 July 2026 and the event takes place on 23 January 2027. Entry fees are listed as Soldier $150 and U18 Recruit $90, and the field is limited to 150 spots.
The event follows the Backyard Ultra format. Each lap is 6.71 km and must be completed within one hour; a new lap begins every hour and the event continues until one participant completes one more lap than all others and remains alone. Each lap includes approximately 80 m of elevation.
Terrain on the course includes coastal edge, open paddocks, the historic Yankee Trail, wetlands with kahikatea remnants, and ex-farm tracks. All participants are expected to be self-sufficient and bring shelter, food, hydration, and all equipment required for extended field operations. Crew are welcome and encouraged to support participants while respecting the self-sufficiency requirement.
The event name references the 1970s television series MAS*H and the concept of a temporary field unit operating under pressure. In partnership with the Kapiti U.S. Marines Trust, event proceeds support restoration of on-site World War II exhibits. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
