Penshaw Half Marathon
The Penshaw Half Marathon is part of the Urban Trails series organised by Trail Outlaws and is based at Herrington Country Park in Penshaw, Tyne and Wear. The race starts at the foot of Penshaw Hill and follows trails on the north and south sides of the River Wear, with views of the river and local wildlife, finishing at Penshaw Monument.
The course distance is 13.2 miles, with total ascent of 1,591 feet and total descent of 1,469 feet. The route is marked and taped and marshals are positioned at key points; competitors are responsible for their own navigation. There are checkpoints at 5.5, 8 and 9 miles where water and sweets are provided; water is also available at the finish. The overall completion cut off is 3.5 hours.
Entry includes a bespoke medal, electronic race timing and instant online results provided by TOTS, feed stations, medical cover, free event parking and digital photography. A race t shirt is available to purchase. Mandatory kit includes shoes suitable for the ground conditions. First aid provision at the event area includes a paramedic and ambulance; the nearest local hospital is Washington Primary Care Centre.
Event rules include requirements to carry mandatory kit, log numbers at checkpoints, respect other users of the course, and avoid littering. Dogs are not permitted. Earphones may be used but must be removed or taken off the head at road crossings, approaching checkpoints, at marshal instructions and on narrow single file sections.
