Shotover Moonlight Mountain Marathon

The Shotover Moonlight Mountain Marathon is an off‑road trail running event held on Ben Lomond Station near Queenstown, New Zealand. The course starts on the beach below the Pipeline Bridge in Skippers Canyon and finishes at Moke Lake. It follows abandoned 1880s gold mining water races, sheep tracks on ridgelines, beech forest and river valleys, and includes a tunnel, ladder beside a waterfall, a scree slope descent and mustering routes.

The race covers a variety of surfaces, with over 60% of the route on single track. Trail surface breakdown provided for the course is:

  • Water race (single track) 13 km 30%
  • Ridgeline and other single track 13 km 30%
  • Riverbed, river valley 8 km 20%
  • Farm 4WD track 8 km 20%

Elevation change is significant, with over 2500 m of climbing and descending. Estimated finishing ranges are given for different runner categories, and cutoffs and a shorter bypass option are used on course if required for safety; an overall course cutoff at 12 hours is applied. The course is on private property and no access is permitted outside race day. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
