About the race

The Motatapu Trail Marathon is a 42.2 km off-road race across privately owned high-country stations in the Queenstown Lakes region, running from Motatapu Station near Glendhu Bay, Lake Wānaka to Wilcox Green, Arrowtown. The course includes approximately 1050 m of cumulative climb and reaches a highest point of 880 m. The route follows farm tracks, the Macetown Track, and multiple river crossings.

The event operates in a remote alpine environment with variable weather. All competitors must carry the mandatory gear listed for the marathon; mandatory gear is checked and required for entry to the start area. Marathon athletes are transported to the start line by bus as there is no private vehicle access; a bag-drop service moves non-mandatory items to the finish area. There are four self-service aid stations along the course supplying water, electrolyte drink and Clif Power Bars; aid stations are cup-free and athletes should carry their own vessels and sufficient food and drink.

Entry is limited to competitors aged 18 years or older. The race enforces cut-off points along the course and requires athletes to attend a pre-race briefing. Overall male and female winners receive NZD 500 each. The event is an official UTMB Index Race. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
