About the race
The Arrowtown Backyard Ultra is a timed running event in Arrowtown, New Zealand on 7 November 2026. The format requires competitors to run a fixed loop of 6.71 km each hour and repeat that loop every hour until only one runner completes a final lap. Competitors who fail to finish a lap within one hour or who are not present in the starting corral at the next lap start are recorded as DNF.
The course uses the Arrow River Trail and consists mainly of hard-packed trail with a winding singletrack through bush, two pedestrian bridges over the Arrow River, and several creek crossings. The Strava elevation for the course is 48 m. The event village is at Butler Green in Arrowtown and provides a central area for competitors and support crews; competitors must provide their own gazebo, food and water. Each competitor may erect a 3 m by 3 m gazebo in the event village. Limited facilities available include a microwave and hot water and a small number of power points.
Support is only permitted within the event village between laps; no support may be given during a lap. The event is self-supported, prohibits pacing and artificial aids, and allows team entries where each member still competes individually. A free kids trail race on a 1 km loop runs alongside the main event. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
