Red Kite Race 2026

The Red Kite Race was first held on 5 July 2015 and has been adjusted over the years in response to forestry management; the 2026 event uses a revised route. The event is an approximately 10 km off road trail through the Derwent Valley, covering roughly 256 m of ascent (about 840 feet) and running over rugged valley terrain.

The route is fully marked and marshals are stationed at key points. A GPX file of the route is provided by the organiser. Aid stations on the course will provide water. Minimum age to enter is 18 years. Registration takes place at the Dipton Jubilee Centre, Front Street, Dipton, DH9 9DR, where toilets are available inside the registration area.

Entry is handled through SiEntries with the published fees of UKA member £20 and non member £22. Entries will also be accepted on the day by cash only, subject to availability. Winners, trophies and medals will be announced by the organiser.

The Derwent Valley is home to the red kite, a bird of prey noted for its long forked tail, reddish brown plumage and a wingspan reported at about 1.8 metre. Runners on the valley trails commonly observe the species overhead. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
