New River Gorge Rim to Rim Race

The New River Gorge Rim to Rim Race is a 6 mile running road race across the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve near Fayetteville, West Virginia. The course starts on the south rim on Fayette Station Road (Route 82), follows Burma Road and Ames Heights Road, descends about 800 feet to cross the New River, then climbs about 800 feet back to the opposite rim and finishes with a short trail section at Adventures on the Gorge.

The route includes a steep section with a maximum 20 percent grade, commonly referred to as the Burma Burn. Racers check in at the finish area at Adventures on the Gorge and are provided bus transportation to the start line. Participants must maintain at least a 20 minute per mile pace to complete the event within the allotted closed road timeframe.

Registration for the 2027 race opens August 31, 2026, with tiered entry fees through April 27 and a last-minute packet pick-up option April 30 if space is available. The event requires a signed release of liability and adherence to race rules; there are no refunds but registrations may be transferred. Active Southern West Virginia does not mail race bibs, shirts, medals, or awards unless a donation is provided to cover shipping.

Race services include a closed road course, chip timing, a water station on route, a finisher medal, a short sleeve unisex t-shirt, finish line photos, and a post-race brunch at the resort. Proceeds support community physical activity programming. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
