About the race
The Family Tough Guy & Gal Challenge in Kumeū, West Auckland is a family team obstacle event held at the Kumeū Showgrounds on Sunday 1 August 2027. The course is an approximately 3km loop where course length may vary by venue but is equated to the time taken on a flat 3km cross country course.
Teams must follow specified age ratios: 2-person teams require one adult (18+) plus one child (5–17); 3-, 4- and 5-person team compositions specify the number of adults and children permitted, with a maximum ratio of one adult per three children. Teams of 4 or 5 receive three bibs and will receive 4 or 5 medals depending on team size.
The event features a mix of family-friendly and classic obstacles such as mud pits, climbing walls, and crawling tunnels across farmland and natural bushland. Facilities at the venue include hot showers, toilets, changing rooms, covered gathering areas, on-site hot food and coffee for purchase, and free parking. Covered footwear is compulsory; moulded-stud football or rugby boots are acceptable while running spikes or aluminium studs are not.
Every competitor receives a finishers medal and a downloadable certificate. No merit prizes are awarded; spot prizes are randomly drawn at prize-giving and must be collected in person.
