Zombie Backyard Ultra is scheduled for August 29, 2026 in Pelham, AL, organized by Zombie Trail Races. The event uses the Last Zombie Standing backyard-ultra format at Oak Mountain State Park.

The course is a loop of 4.167 miles (4 miles 880 feet) with roughly 500 feet of climb and descent per lap. Runners have space to set up a tent or canopy near the start/finish area. Limited aid is available at the start/finish. The event field is capped at 100 participants.

Key format and rules are:

  • Each loop starts exactly one hour after the previous loop.
  • Competitors have one hour to complete each loop, including the final lap.
  • Runners must be in the starting corral when the bell sounds to begin a loop.
  • Warning bells sound at 3, 2, and 1 minutes before each start; late starts are not permitted.
  • Competitors may not leave the course during a loop except to use restrooms.
  • No non-competitors are allowed on the course and no personal aid is allowed during a loop.
  • Artificial aids such as trekking poles are not permitted.
  • Slower runners must allow faster runners to pass.
  • The winner is the last individual to complete a loop; if no runner completes one more loop than all others, no winner is declared. All other participants are recorded with distance covered and are technically DNF.
