World Championship Pack Burro Race
The World Championship Pack Burro Race is a historic event held in Fairplay, Colorado. This competition requires every participant to be accompanied by a burro throughout the course. Runners are responsible for providing their own animal, whether owned, borrowed, or rented. In accordance with event regulations, each burro must carry a pack saddle equipped with a gold pan, a shovel, and a pick. Participants must retain all equipment for the duration of the event, as the loss of any gear results in disqualification.
The event offers two distinct distances:
- Long Course (29+ miles)
- Short Course (approximately 12.3 miles)
The Long Course starts at an elevation of 9,953 feet and reaches its halfway point at the summit of Mosquito Pass at 13,185 feet. This route involves a total elevation change of 3,232 feet. The Short Course utilizes an updated route that includes steep ascents and descents through wooded dirt roads. This path passes a high alpine pond at the halfway mark before returning via the traditional inbound trail.
Specific rules govern the handling of the animals. Jack chains are permitted only when used with a pressure-release technique over the muzzle, under the chin, or through the mouth. Due to the nature of the terrain and high altitude, it is recommended that teams carry food, water, and clothing suitable for various weather conditions.
