Welsh 3 Peaks Race

The Welsh 3 Peaks Race is a multi-day continuous footrace covering 286 kilometres with 11,300 metres of ascent. Entrants can compete as a SOLO runner or as part of TEAMS of 3 or 6. The route starts in Llanberis and finishes at Storey Arms, largely following the Cambrian Way through Yr Wyddfa, Moelwyn, Rhinog, Mawddach, Cadair Idris, Pumlumon, the Radnorshire Hills and Bannau Brecheiniog to Pen y Fan.

The event is fully tracked, timed and monitored and offers five indoor rest areas providing toilets, first aid, food, drinks, masseurs and sleeping areas. Indoor checkpoints and their distances are:

  • Penmeanpool (69km)
  • Commins Coch (118km)
  • Devils Bridge (165km)
  • Rhiandwrmwyn (218km)
  • Llandeusant (246km)

The total event time limit is 4.5 days (108 hours), which equates to an average required speed of about 1.7 mph to complete. Outdoor support stations provide water, first aid and provisions, and a team of Outdoor Professionals and Mountain Leaders are positioned along the route. Competitors are expected to be largely self-sufficient in mountain and remote environments and are advised to have support arrangements available.

Team format rules split the route into fixed legs. Teams of 3 cover legs of 119 km, 100 km and 66 km. Teams of 6 run legs of 69 km, 50 km, 47 km, 53 km, 28 km and 41 km. Kit requirements apply equally to Solo and Team participants. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
