Trail Running in Northern Michigan

The Waugoshance Trail Run takes place in Emmet County, Michigan, featuring a course that utilizes a significant section of the North Country Trail. The routes travel from Cross Village toward Mackinaw City in the northwestern region of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. The terrain consists of over 90% single track trail, including rolling bluffs with views of Lake Michigan, coastal forests, and several inland wilderness lakes.

Available distances for the event include:

  • 50K
  • Marathon
  • Half-Marathon

The 50K and Marathon courses begin at Wycamp Lake. Participants run along the Sturgeon Bay bluffs and through lowland areas filled with wildflowers. The 50K distance includes an additional five-mile section along the Sturgeon Bay Trail. Both routes pass Canada Goose Pond and continue along the shoreline of French Farm Lake, a wilderness lake surrounded by tall pines. The final three miles of the course follow a flat, converted rail trail leading to the athletic grounds of Mackinaw City School.

The Half-Marathon, often referred to as a heavy half, starts within Wilderness State Park near Canada Goose Pond. It follows the second half of the marathon course, crossing the Carp River and passing through dense balsam fir forests before reaching the finish line.

The event is a cup-less race, requiring all participants to carry a 20 oz water bottle or a hydration system. Aid stations along the route provide water, electrolyte drinks, and nutrition products. Transportation is provided for participants via buses departing from Mackinaw City School to the various starting locations. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
