Wainwright Runners Backyard Ultra 2026

The Wainwright Runners Backyard Ultra is a running event held in Wainwright, Alberta. The competition follows the Backyard Ultra format, requiring participants to complete a 6.7 km loop every hour for a maximum of 24 hours, covering a total distance of up to 100 miles.

The route starts and finishes at the Wainwright Splash Park. The course is set on hard surfaces, consisting primarily of asphalt paths and sidewalks with some road sections. Participants and crews can set up on the grass at the splash park, which features on-site flush toilets. Middlemass campground is located near the start location for those requiring accommodation. Limited snacks and water are provided at the start/finish, but runners are expected to bring their own hydration and fuel.

The event rules specify that the winner is the last person standing. The second to last person is designated as the assist. If more than two runners start the final loop, the winner is determined by the fastest final lap time.

This event functions as a fundraiser for the Wainwright Pound. Each registered participant receives a hooded blanket and a wooden "DNF" coin. The event is dog friendly, provided pets remain leashed and well behaved. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
