Vero Beach Octopus Ultra

The Vero Beach Octopus Ultra is a multi-distance trail event held in Vero Beach, Florida and organized by Mule Racing. The race base is located on the grounds of the Environmental Learning Center, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the center.

The course uses a centralized base station with eight out-and-back "Octo-Arms." Completing all eight arms within 32 hours earns the Octopus Buckle. The event offers a range of distances created by combining arms; examples given by the organizer link specific arm combinations to standard ultra distances.

Distances offered include:

  • 100 Miler: complete all eight Octo-Arms
  • 100K: complete arms A1 through A5
  • 50 Miler: complete arms A1 through A4
  • 50K
  • Mini-Ultra: about 29.4 miles
  • Ultra Teaser: arm 1, about 16.86 miles
  • Tentacle "Heavy" 5K Dash

Cutoffs are described as loose, with a 32 hour limit for distances. Organizers note long sections with no water access and reserve the right to remove participants for health or safety concerns related to summer heat. Leaving the course for any reason results in a DNF. Crew support is not mandatory but is highly recommended; first 100 mile attempts are advised to have an experienced crew.
