Vero Beach Octopus Ultra
The Vero Beach Octopus Ultra is a multi-distance ultramarathon held on the grounds of the Environmental Learning Center in Vero Beach, Florida. The event uses a centralized base with eight out and back arms, called Octo-Arms, that combine to form the various race distances.
Distances offered include:
- 100 miles
- 100 kilometers
- 50 miles
- 50 kilometers
- Mini-Ultra, 29.4 miles
- Ultra Teaser, 16.86 miles
- Tentacle Heavy 5K Dash
Finishing all eight Octo-Arms within 32 hours earns the Octopus Buckle. Completing arms A1 through A4 constitutes a 50 mile distance; adding A5 results in a 100 kilometer distance. The organizers state that leaving the course for any reason is grounds for a DNF.
Because the event takes place in South Florida summer conditions, the race director and organizers reserve the right to remove participants at any time for health concerns related to heat or other risks. There are long sections with no water access. Crew support is not mandatory but is strongly recommended; participants attempting their first 100 mile race must have an experienced 100 mile crew. A portion of event proceeds will be donated to the Environmental Learning Center. Sponsors listed include Trail Toes and LMNT. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
