10K & 5K @ 10,000 Feet
The 10K & 5K @ 10,000 Feet takes place on Vail Mountain, starting at an elevation of 10,000 feet above sea level. Participants traverse the mountain landscape, including the back bowls of Vail, with courses that offer views of the Vail Valley, the Gore Range, and local wildflowers.
The event features two primary distances:
- 10 km: A course with an average grade of 7 percent and an elevation gain of approximately 1,200 feet.
- 5 km: A shorter route which also takes place at high altitude.
The race starts at Mid-Vail, located at the top of Gondola One. Participants use their race bibs as a lift ticket to ride the gondola to the start area. The 10K route follows Eagle's Nest Road before moving onto the Grand Traverse Trail and descending via the Kinnikinnick Trail. The 5K route utilizes the Grand Escape Trail and the Meadow's Loop to return to the finish line.
Aid stations along the course provide water and hydration drinks. The event follows a papercup-less policy, and runners are encouraged to bring their own reusable cups or hydration systems. Post-race refreshments include donuts and fresh fruit. Participants receive a custom t-shirt, and awards are presented to the top finishers in various age categories ranging from youth to 70 and over.
Parking is available at the Vail Village and Lionshead parking structures. Spectators are permitted to ride the gondola to the finish area with a voucher, though animals are strictly prohibited on the lift. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
