Vail HillClimb : 50th running, July 5, 2026
The Vail HillClimb is a long-running trail race in Vail, Colorado, marking its 50th edition in 2026. The route climbs from Vail Village and finishes at Mid-Vail, following the historic gravel service road that began as a gravel double-track in 1976. The event is part of the Vail Trail Running Series.
The course covers 12.2K (7.6 miles) with an elevation gain of 2,128 feet, a high point near 10,254 feet and a low point near 8,160 feet. Running surfaces are approximately 80% dirt and gravel roads and 20% paved, with a maximum grade of 13.5%. Aid stations are located at mile 2.1 (Mill Creek / Gitalong Rd split), mile 3.8 (below the Avanti lift) and mile 5.9 (below Eagle’s Nest). Water and Skratch hydration are provided at aid stations. The race encourages minimal waste and recommends reusable hydration devices. Donuts and fresh fruit will be available at the finish.
Registrations completed before June 12, 2026 will receive a custom 50th Vail HillClimb bib with the participant’s name. Bib pickup is scheduled at the Colorado Snowsports Museum on the days before the race and at the race start area near Vail’s Mountain Haus on race morning. Parking in the Vail Village Parking Structure is recommended.
Awards are presented at the Mid-Vail finish with prizes for the top three male and female finishers in standard age groups. A raffle includes entries for all racers; winners must be present. Volunteer roles include course support, check-in, swag distribution and timing; volunteers receive post-race refreshments and a race t-shirt and can earn credit toward series All-Star recognition.
