Trail Running in the Colorado Rockies

The Cougar Ridge Classic offers point-to-point trail races starting in Vail and finishing in the town of Minturn. Participants traverse across Vail Mountain, passing through golden aspen groves and high-alpine terrain with views of Mount of the Holy Cross. Registration for the event is limited to 250 racers.

Participants can choose between two distinct distances:

  • 26K (actual distance 25.9 km): Features a 1,048-meter ascent and a 1,156-meter descent. The route includes a long climb via Cabin Trail and Kinnickinnick Trail, reaching a high point of 3,346 meters above sea level before descending technical singletrack.
  • 14K (actual distance 14.3 km): Starts at Eagle's Nest and consists primarily of a steady descent. It features a 180-meter ascent and a 930-meter descent, utilizing the Cougar Ridge Singletrack Trail.

The terrain for the longer distance is composed of 78% singletrack, 16% dirt or gravel roads, and 6% paved surfaces. The shorter course increases the singletrack portion to 82%. Shuttles are available to transport participants from the finish area in Minturn to the respective start locations in Vail.

Five aid stations are positioned along the 26K course, offering water, electrolyte drinks, and various snacks. Some aid stations serve as gear drop locations. An after-party and awards ceremony take place in downtown Minturn following the race, where participants can use a lunch voucher included with their bib at participating local restaurants.
