The event Union Wood is a mountain running race scheduled for Saturday, 16th May 2026 in County Sligo.

Route

The long course is an 8 km off-road run with a 228 m climb. The route includes gravel paths, single-track trails, and hilly sections leading to the top of Union Rock, which offers a panoramic view. The descent uses a boardwalk for approximately 100 meters. The final section is a flat 2 km run on gravel to the finish. A short course of approximately 6 km is available. It follows the same route as the long course but excludes the climb to Union Rock.

Location

The start and finish area is at the car park next to Ballisodare FC, near Ballisodare, Co. Sligo.

Registration and Entry

Entry costs €7 for seniors and €5 for over-65s and under-18s. There is an entry limit of 250 participants. Entries open on Monday, 11th May 2026 at 21:00 and close on Friday, 15th May 2026 at 18:00. There are no entries on the day. All participants must be members of the Irish Mountain Running Association (IMRA). On-site registration opens at 9:00 and closes at 09:50. An early start option is available for runners who sign in between 9:00-9:25, with the early race starting at 9:30.

Mandatory Kit

All runners must bring a showerproof, windproof jacket (Level A kit). The specific kit to be carried will be confirmed on race day based on conditions. Runners must have a means to carry all required kit.

Other Information

The event is part of the North West League. The route is fully marked, and GPS devices are allowed. Juniors (U16 and U18) run the short course and must be signed in by a parent or guardian. Run the slopes of Benbulben in County Sligo on a 9 km course with 400 m of climb. A mandatory kit list applies and registration is in Grange village, with a shuttle bus to the start. A 4.5 km short course is also available.
