Benbulben (Luke's Bridge)
Benbulben (Luke's Bridge)
This is a mountain running event on Benbulben in County Sligo. The main route is about 9.00 km with roughly 400 m of ascent. A short course of about 4.50 km is available and serves as the junior route.
The route begins on tarmac and moves to gravel, bog and grass at the foot of the ascent. The principal climb gains about 150 m to a plateau near a stream. From the top the route continues northwest along undulating terrain to the trig point, which is the marshalled turn point for both courses. Runners return along the same line and then follow a separate marked descent route back to the road and finish. Descending runners have right of way. The course is marked with IMRA markers and marshals at major junctions. GPS devices are not allowed.
There are dangerous cliffs in the vicinity but the route does not go directly to cliff edges. Organisers note the main ascent and descent are very steep and require care. Mandatory kit is Level B standard and includes a waterproof jacket; hat or buff; gloves; whistle; charged mobile phone with the emergency number stored; and a foil blanket, bivvy bag or equivalent. Random kit checks may be carried out and failure to carry required items can result in denial of entry or disqualification.
Practical details: entries open 29 June 2026 and close 3 July 2026. Entry fees are €7 for seniors and €5 for over 65s and under 18s. Entries are limited to 250 places.
