UK Wife Carrying Race : Dorking

The UK Wife Carrying Race is an annual novelty running event held from Race HQ at The Priory School in Dorking, Surrey. The event follows a short out and back course up The Nower, covering 380 m with a steady 15 m ascent on the outward leg and the same return route. The race was first run in 2008 and has links to the sport’s origins in Scandinavia; the winning couple qualify for the World Wife Carrying Championships in Finland.

Entrants follow a set of published rules. Carriers may be male or female and those carried must be human, alive and at least 18 years old. There is a weigh in before the start; all carried participants must weigh at least 50 kg or wear added weight in a rucksack. All carried competitors must wear a helmet. Obstacles and water hazards are included and spectators may staff a Splash Zone on the return leg. A range of recognised holds may be used, including bridal carry, piggy back, shoulder ride, fireman’s carry, the Estonian hold and the Dorking hold. Fancy dress is expected and novelty prizes are awarded.

Entry fees are not refundable though places may be transferred. The event uses a local school as Race HQ, works with local suppliers and donates profits to Mid Surrey Community Fridges to reduce waste and support the community. Included in entry are race numbers, commemorative coasters, bottles of local beer and prizes for winners and novelty categories. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
