The Trail of the Dragon takes place in Moorehead Park, Ida Grove, Iowa. The event is held in conjunction with the Moorehead Park Trail Mazathon, with proceeds donated to the Ida County Conservation Foundation. The course features single track dirt paths and mowed meadows that transition through rolling hills and historic sites. Runners pass a variety of landmarks, including an old stage coach trail, a historic homestead, a cemetery for early settlers, and a one-room school house.

Available distances include:

• 50 Miles (five 10-mile loops)
• 50 km (three 10-mile loops plus a 1-mile section)

The course involves approximately 1,000 feet of elevation gain per 10-mile loop. Participants should be prepared for potential wet conditions in the meadows due to dew. For the 50 Mile distance, pacers are permitted to join runners for the fourth and fifth loops. All finishers receive a medal.

This is a cupless event, and participants must carry their own hydration device. Organizers provide two manned aid stations per loop, located at the start/finish and the 5-mile mark. These stations are stocked with water, electrolyte drinks, and various foods such as peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, pretzels, and fruit. Three additional unmanned water-only stations are positioned at miles 2, 4, and 8. Drop bag locations are available at the start/finish and the mid-way aid station.

Additional amenities include a pasta meal available by donation during Friday evening packet pick-up. Primitive camping is available on-site at Moorehead Park, with alternative campgrounds and motels located within 2 to 20 miles of the event.
