Trail Running in Moorehead Park
The Moorehead Park Trail Mazathon features a course through the rolling hills of Moorehead Park in Ida Grove, Iowa. The route utilizes a combination of single-track dirt trails and mowed meadow paths. Runners pass several historical landmarks, including an old stagecoach stop, an original homestead, a cemetery, a train depot, and a one-room schoolhouse.
The event is organized into an 8.8-mile loop. Each loop involves approximately 1000 feet of elevation gain. Participants may choose from three distance options:
- 8.8 miles (one loop)
- 17.6 miles (two loops)
- 26.2 miles (three loops)
The course includes two manned aid stations per loop, located at the start-finish line and near mile 5. These stations provide water, electrolyte drinks, and various food items such as sandwiches, fruit, and salty snacks. Three additional unmanned water-only stations are positioned at miles 2, 4, and 8. This is a cupless event; all participants must carry their own hydration vessel.
There are no water crossings, though grass in the meadows may be wet with dew. Drop bag locations are available at the start-finish line and the mid-way aid station. Finisher medals are awarded for all distances, and event proceeds benefit the Ida County Conservation Foundation. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
