Tower Tag Challenge : Sleeping Giant State Park

The Tower Tag Challenge is a timed loop event held on December 6 at Sleeping Giant State Park in Hamden, Connecticut (200 Mt Carmel Ave). The event offers two options, an 8-hour and a 4-hour format, in which runners complete repeated out-and-back laps on the Tower Trail. The Tower Trail is a mostly smooth carriage road that ascends about 600 feet in 1.5 miles to the Observation Tower. Each lap starts at the pavilion, includes a short paved section at the start/end, follows a winding crushed gravel path up to the tower (counterclockwise around it), and returns the same way. Each attempt is approximately 3.3 miles.

Logistics, services and rules

Runners should expect a start/finish aid station stocked with water or electrolyte drink and typical snack items (chips, pretzels, candy). The event is cupless; runners are required to carry their own hydration bottle, pack, or cup. Parking is available just inside the park entrance and on the north side of Mt Carmel Avenue. There is packet pickup on race day and port-a-johns at the bottom of the Tower Trail. Entry fees are nonrefundable and registrations are not transferable. Finisher medals (from Ragged Cuts), sponsor swag, and podium awards for the top three overall male and female finishers are included. The organizer asks runners to follow marked course lines, avoid littering, respect other trail users, and avoid smoking or alcohol on park trails.
