Tough Mountain Challenge

The Tough Mountain Challenge is an outdoor adventure obstacle race held at Sunday River in Newry, Maine. The main course covers 5K and passes through mud, water, walls and wooded terrain, with a variety of manmade obstacles along the route.

The course for the 2026 event includes two newly added obstacles. The event typically serves about 3,600 competitors each year and takes place on mountain terrain at the resort.

The event weekend includes a slopeside music event called the Big Ass Bash on the Friday before the race, held at South Ridge with live music and on-site gathering space. Organizers offer resort lodging deals for the weekend, including promotional savings of up to 20 percent through a lodging promotion code.

A separate Mini Mountain Challenge for children is part of the weekend schedule; registration for 2026 is listed as open. The overall layout emphasizes off-road trail sections, water features and constructed obstacles set on resort slopes and nearby trails.
