Event overview

The Thumbs Up Vertical Challenge takes place in Estes Park, CO on December 6, 2025. The event consists of repeated ascents of the Thumb Open Space out-and-back trail. At the turnaround, runners collect one poker chip and deposit it in an assigned jar; chips are counted to determine finishing order. Entry is limited to 30 participants. Registration opens September 1, 2025 and closes December 5, 2025.

Course

The trail features a vertical gain of 540 ft per ascent. Terrain is single-track with switchbacks, steps and steep rocks. The Thumb Open Space is on the south side of Prospect Mountain; the town purchased 65 acres of the property in 2021 and it opened to public access in 2022. Users are asked to stay on the marked public trail.
