The South Hams Ultra

The South Hams Ultra offers two distance options that mostly follow the South Hams Way around South Hams in Devon. The route uses public rights of way, bridleways and coastal paths and crosses parts of Dartmoor National Park, South Hams countryside, and five estuaries. The course runs clockwise, starting near Bigbury at Mount Folly Farm campsite, and the full loop finishes in Aveton Gifford at the Village Hall. The shorter option finishes in Totnes at Town Mill, Coronation Rd, Totnes TQ9 5DF.

Route, checkpoints and logistics

Time limits and ascent figures are published: the 105 mile race has a 32 hour time limit with 4828 meters ascent; the 56 mile race has a 16 hour time limit with 2325 meters ascent. There will be a minimum of six checkpoints: CP1 Flete Estate (14 km, river crossing); CP2 Ivybridge (53 km, Erme Bridge Playing Fields); CP3 South Brent (63 km, South Brent Village Hall); CP4 Totnes (90 km, Town Mill) which is the 56 mile finish; CP5 Dartmouth (110 km, Castle); CP6 East Portlemouth (143 km, The Passageway). Organiser provisions include GPS trackers provided by Geotracks, marshals, professional first aid, insurance, parking, bag drop, bespoke finisher medals, category prizes, a minimum of six feed stations, and the Salcombe ferry crossing paid in advance.

Required or recommended kit includes a map or GPS device, water resistant top and bottoms, a minimum 250 ml water container, suitable off road shoes, mobile phone, base layer, hat or buff, gloves, head torch plus replacement battery or spare, snacks, and a compass.
