The South Hams Ultra

The South Hams Ultra is a circumnavigation running event around South Hams in Devon offering three distances. The route follows the South Hams Way for most of the course and uses public rights of way, bridleways and coastal paths, passing through parts of Dartmoor National Park and across five estuaries.

Distances:

  • 100 miles: cut off 35 hours. Ascent 4890 m
  • 44 miles: cut off 14 hours. Ascent 1947 m
  • Marathon (26 miles): cut off 8 hours. Ascent 1183 m

The full course runs anticlockwise from Mothecombe on the Flete Estate, crossing the Erme estuary and continuing via Bigbury, Aveton Gifford, Salcombe (ferry to East Portlemouth), Dartmouth, Totnes, Buckfastleigh, South Brent, Ivybridge, Noss Mayo and back to Mothecombe. Forty four milers start at Old Town Mill in Totnes; marathon runners start at the Old School Community Centre in South Brent.

There are eight checkpoints for the 100 mile course, four for the 44 mile race and three for the marathon. Selected checkpoint locations include Averton Gifford car park, East Portlemouth Mill Bay, Start Point car park, Dartmouth the Green, Totnes Old Town Mill, Buckfastleigh Moor, Ivybridge Playing Fields and The Ship Inn Noss Mayo.

Included services: GPS trackers supplied by Geotracks, marshalled course, professional first aid, insurance, parking, bespoke finisher medals, prizes for category winners, bag drop and a paid ferry crossing. Trail runs nearby

Langstone Fell Race runs from Peter Tavy across Coombe Tor, Cox Tor and the Langstone over roughly 10 km, with 2k and 5k options and junior races; parking, toilets and post-race refreshments are provided.

A guided trail run of about 10 miles through woodland tracks, river valley paths and minor lanes around the Tamar Valley, starting at the Tamar Trails carpark. Steady guided pace; trail shoes, waterproof and snacks recommended.

A timed off-road challenge from HMP Dartmoor where participants choose a route on public rights of way and aim for the greatest straight-line distance in 6, 12, or 24 hours. All entrants carry GPS trackers and receive a medal.

Muskie Madness is an unmeasured 10k multi terrain race on 31 May 2026 at Marine Academy Plymouth. The course mixes on road and wooded trail sections and the venue offers showers, bag drop, food and water stations.
