The South Hams Ultra

The South Hams Ultra is a long-distance running event in Devon that circumnavigates the South Hams region. The course primarily follows the South Hams Way, while also incorporating public rights of way, bridleways, and coastal paths. Participants travel through Dartmoor National Park, the South Hams countryside, and across five separate estuaries.

The event offers three distinct distances:

  • 100 miles: A full circumnavigation starting and finishing at the Flete Estate, featuring 4890 meters of ascent and a 35-hour cut-off.
  • 44 miles: A point-to-point route starting at the Old Town Mill in Totnes and finishing at Mothecombe, with 1947 meters of ascent and a 14-hour cut-off.
  • Marathon (26 miles): A point-to-point race starting at the Old School Community Centre in South Brent and finishing at Mothecombe, with 1183 meters of ascent and an 8-hour cut-off.

The terrain involves a variety of landscapes, including the Erme estuary, the tidal road at Aveton Gifford, and the Dart Valley Way. A ferry crossing at Salcombe is required for the longer routes, with the passage pre-arranged by the organizers. Depending on the distance, the course includes between three and eight feed stations. Participants are provided with GPS trackers, marshalled support, and professional first aid. All finishers receive a bespoke medal, and prizes are awarded to category winners. Required equipment includes off-road shoes, waterproof clothing, a head torch, and a minimum of 500ml water capacity. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
