The Sand Monster 6 Hour Ultra
The Sand Monster is a six hour timed trail race held at Sesquicentennial State Park in Columbia, SC. Athletes may run, hike, or walk as many laps of a marked 3.5-mile loop as they choose within the six hour limit. A single completed lap is required for a finish to be recorded.
The loop features about 270 feet of vertical gain and a mix of single track and double track. One of the longer climbs is sandy but generally compact under a layer of pine needles. Many sections are shaded by trees and the course will be marked.
Race results count full laps completed within the six hour window. When several athletes have completed the same number of laps, finishing order is determined by the order of completion of the last full lap. The event does not use a broom wagon and athletes may stop after any lap.
Event services and extras include portable restrooms, personalized bibs, a Boco Gear technical trucker hat for each starter and volunteers subject to registration timing, and at least one personalized inspiration card from a local elementary school. Organizers plan unique awards for the top four overall male and female finishers, awards for top male and female grand masters age 50 and older, several special awards, and a post race raffle.
