The Sand Monster 6 Hour Ultra : Columbia, SC
The Sand Monster is a six hour timed trail race held on March 21, 2027, at Sesquicentennial State Park in Columbia, SC (9564 Two Notch Road). Participants run, hike, or walk repeated laps on a 3.5-mile loop with approximately 270 feet of vertical gain per lap.
The loop combines single track and double track trails, includes one longer sandy climb, and is mostly covered with pine needles with firm sand beneath. Much of the course is shaded by trees and the route is marked. Athletes may complete as many laps as they can within the six hour limit; completing at least one 3.5-mile lap within the time limit is required for an official finish. When multiple competitors complete the same number of laps, placement is determined by the finish order of the last completed lap.
The event emphasizes the participant experience. On-course amenities include portable toilets and marked support; organizers plan a bell at the finish for personal milestones and post-race awards and a raffle. Each starter and volunteer is scheduled to receive a Boco Gear technical trucker hat (late registrants may be excluded), plus a personalized bib and an inspiration card prepared by local elementary school students. Competitive awards include top four overall finishers for men and women, top male and female grand masters age 50 and over, and several unique awards such as Spirit, Honey Badger, and Far Out.
