The Sand Monster : March 21, 2027, Columbia, SC
The Sand Monster is a 6-hour timed trail race held at Sesquicentennial State Park in Columbia, SC. Competitors run, hike, or walk repeated laps of a 3.5-mile loop that carries about 270 feet of vertical gain per lap. The loop combines single track and double track surfaces, with pine-needle covered trails and one longer sandy climb that gives the event its name. Trees line much of the course, providing shade, and the route will be marked.
A finish requires completion of at least one 3.5-mile lap within the six-hour race period. Athletes may complete as many laps as they can; laps completed before the time limit count toward official results. If multiple participants complete the same number of laps, placing is determined by the finish order of the last completed lap.
Each starter and many volunteers receive a Boco Gear technical trucker hat and a personalized bib. Starters also receive a personalized inspiration card produced with local elementary schools. Awards are presented to the top four overall male and female finishers and to the top male and female grand masters (50+). No individual age-group awards are planned, but additional recognitions such as Spirit, Honey Badger, and Far Out awards will be given. A post-race raffle accompanies awards.
