The Sand Monster
The Sand Monster is a 6 hour timed trail race held on March 21, 2027 in Sesquicentennial State Park, Columbia SC. Athletes may run, hike, or walk as many laps as they choose within the six hour window.
The course is a 3.5-mile loop with about 270 feet of vertical gain per lap. Runners will encounter a mix of single track and double track, a longer sandy climb that gives the event its name, and trails covered with pine needles over firm sand. Much of the loop is shaded and the route will be marked.
A valid finish requires completion of at least one full loop within the six hour race period. Laps completed by each athlete determine distance, and ties on number of laps are decided by the finish order of the last completed loop. There are no intermediate cutoffs or a sweep vehicle; all laps must be completed before the six hour limit.
Event services and amenities include packet pickup and a pre race briefing, port o jons on site, race timing with a finish bell for new personal best distances, participant bibs, a personalized inspiration card from a local elementary school, and a Boco Gear technical trucker hat for starters and volunteers subject to registration timing. Awards are given to the top four overall men and women and to top male and female grand masters aged 50 and over, plus several specialty awards and a post race raffle.
