The Sesquilizer

The Sesquilizer is a handicapped road race held in Columbia, SC at 9564 Two Notch Road. The event applies age and gender handicaps with staggered start groups so finish order is adjusted by those handicaps. The name combines Sesquicentennial and Equalizer.

The course distance is 8.67 miles and includes about 800 feet of vertical gain. Course files are available in Strava and Garmin formats. The event uses 22 start groups with older age groups placed earlier and the fastest younger men placed last. Start group numbers will be printed on each bib. Participants who want to run together must use the later group slot of the pair.

Awards are planned for the top eight overall finishers and separate age or gender categories are not expected because of the handicapping system. A raffle will be held for participants who remain after the finish. Each starter receives a unisex t shirt with no logos on the back; sizes available range from XS to XL. Organizers will review results after each edition and may adjust handicaps over time to better match actual performance patterns.

Registration opens May 1, 2026. The format draws inspiration from other handicapped races while aiming to keep the local implementation distinct. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
